MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Egyptian counterterrorism forces eliminated two militants of the Hasm extremist group, which is linked to the Muslim Brotherhood terrorist organization, banned in Russia, local media reported Thursday.
The Ahram Online news outlet reported, citing the statement of Egypt's Ministry of Interior, that the terrorists were eliminated during a police raid aimed at targeting the group's hideout in the country's coastal governorate of Beheira. The militants reportedly attempted to fire back at the police officers to evade the arrest.
The ministerial statement said that the militants were involved in plotting several violent attacks, with one of them being responsible for acquiring explosives for the group.
The Hasm group has repeatedly claimed responsibility for attacks on police officers, officials and judges in Cairo and other parts of the country.
