Social media users were shocked and amused by media revelations about French President Emmanuel Macron spending thousands of euros on his makeup alone during his tenure as head of state.

Earlier, French magazine Le Point reported that Macron spent over 26,000 euros on makeup since his arrival at the Elysee Palace.

The journalists managed to obtain two bills, one for 10,000 euros and the other for 16,000 euros, for makeup expenses. Natacha M., the makeup artist who provided these services, had also been taking care of Macron during his presidential campaign and has secured steady income for herself during the next five years thanks to his election, Sputnik France adds.

Many Twitter users were shocked and amused by how much money the French leader apparently spends on maintaining his good looks, wondering if it was such a good idea.

One of them joked that with so much money being spent on makeup, it feels like Kim Kardashian was elected as the French president instead of Macron.

Another likened Macron’s makeup to "perlimpinpin powder" – a colloquialism for fraudulent "magic" powders and cures that have zero beneficial effect, which could be considered as French analogue of "snake oil."

"26000 € Macron’s makeup budget, just for complexion? Imagine if he also needed makeup for his eyes, mouth, blush & outline," snarkily remarked a third.

Yet another user wondered what services exactly was this considerable amount of money spent on.

Some netizens opted not to bother with jokes and went on to openly criticize the French leader.

"26,000 euros makeup bills for #Macron in 3 months. It will be expensive to France if no one puts a stop to waste," one of them declared.

"26 thousand euros for makeup? And for the hairdresser? And for Bridgitte? Glad to know where my taxes go."

And yet some netizens couldn’t help but wonder: how the French president may actually look without makeup if he requires so much money to maintain it?
