Kiev is lending its support to actions aimed at falsifying Ukrainian history, as the country's government keeps silent on recent acts of vandalism, Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Monday, the police in Ukraine's Lviv region said that some metallic letters had been stolen from a memorial to Nikolay Kuznetsov, who was an intelligence agent in Ukraine during the World War II and considered to be a hero of the Soviet Union.

"We see these actions as the outcome of a trend to completely falsify the history of their own country, a trend allowed by the current Kiev regime," Zakharova said, commenting on the event.

The spokeswoman added that this trend appeared to aim "to accommodate the interests of accomplices of fascist aggressors and adherents of their ideology, who, unfortunately, are currently politically influential in Ukraine."

Zakharova said that the Ukrainian government did not provide explicit condemnation of such actions or results of the investigation.

The spokeswoman added that the attempts to erase certain historical events from the people's memory were doomed to fail and stressed that Lviv authorities, and law enforcement should have conducted an investigation into the accident and punished the perpetrators.
