Unexpected heavy rain has transformed the usually desolate wastes of Atacama Desert in Chile into something of a flower garden.

The Atacama Desert is considered one of the driest places on Earth, where the average precipitation level is about 15mm per year.

However, every 5 to 7 years the desert receives heavy rain that causes over 200 species of plants to bloom across this arid landscape.

In 2017 this event occurred earlier than expected, as the previous bloom happened in 2015, just two years ago.

And now, tourists, photographers and botanists from all over the world are flocking to Atacama to witness this rare and magnificent phenomenon.
