Syrian opposition's Moscow platform representative claims that if the de-escalation zones in Syria continued to function for more than half a year, it could lead to further problems.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Representative of the Syrian opposition's Moscow platform Qadri Jamil said Friday that if the de-escalation zones in Syria continued to function for more than half a year, it could lead to further problems in the embattled country.

"We believe that creating such safe zones is a temporary phenomenon. I think that if they would exist for more than six months or a year, it would create new problems, it might lead to a certain split, the regions' separation from one another," Jamil, who also serves as a secretary of the Syrian opposition Popular Front for Change and Liberation, told a press conference organized by the Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency.

Jamil noted that he did not considered establishment of de-escalation zones in Syria a mistake. He added that the Moscow platform was advocating for the sooner achievement of political solution to the Syrian crisis.

"The sooner we achieve this political solution, the easier it will be," he said.

The memorandum on the establishment of four de-escalation zones in war-torn Syria was signed during the fourth Syrian settlement talks in Kazakhstan's capital of Astana in May, with Russia, Iran and Turkey acting as the guarantors of the ceasefire. As of today, the first three zones have been secured in the rebel-controlled south along the border with Jordan, the Eastern Ghouta and north of Homs. The consultations on the fourth safe zone in the Idlib province are ongoing.
