The mayor of Houston, Texas, warned that releasing water from a dam in the area could only increase the water and cause additional flooding amid Hurricane Harvey.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The release of rising waters from the Addicks dam in the US state of Texas can provoke more flooding near the city of Houston, Mayor Sylvester Turner said in a press conference on Monday.

"We constantly have started to release water from Barker, Addicks [reservoir]," Turner stated. "As they increase the water and it comes down, the water level along Buffalo Bayou in all probability will increase… So it could create the even additional problem, additional flooding."

Turner also said that the water level in the Addicks and Baker dams is steady so far.

US Army Corps to Release Water From Dams Near Houston, Texas Amid Flooding Risk
If the authorities do not continue the operations at the Addicks dam, the water behind would go around and create a major problem, Turner said.

The US Army Corps of Engineers is releasing about 2600 cubic feet per second from the Addicks reservoir.

The US Gulf Coast has been battered by Hurricane Harvey since Saturday. On Sunday, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Harvey continued to pose a deadly threat despite its gradual weakening, with media reporting about the death of three people in Aransas County. Local authorities of Houston and Rockport have reportedly confirmed the two deaths.

Harvey was downgraded from a hurricane to tropical storm by the NHC late on Saturday. Harvey is the largest storm to hit the United States since the destructive Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
