KUWAIT CITY (Sputnik) — Currently, Idlib is under the control of jihadists, which highly concerns Russia, Iran and the Assad government.
"Three de-escalation zones have already been established, the fourth one is being formed in the area of Idlib. The next meeting in the Astana format will be held in the near future, where I hope these agreements will be finally fixed in legal documents," Lavrov told reporters after a visit to Kuwait.
The memorandum on the establishment of four de-escalation zones in war-torn Syria was signed during the fourth Syrian settlement talks in Kazakhstan's capital of Astana in May, with Russia, Iran and Turkey acting as the guarantors of the ceasefire. As of today, the first three zones have been secured in the rebel-controlled south along the border with Jordan, the Eastern Ghouta and north of Homs. The consultations on the fourth safe zone in the Idlib province are ongoing.
