Catalonia's possible secession from Spain may result in the spread of pro-independence aspirations among other EU member states, the chairman of Germany's right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) Party told Sputnik.

"In the long run, there might be a domino effect in Europe, however it is not likely to happen in Germany with Bavaria in the near future," Jorg Meuthen said.

Moreover, the politician expressed concern about the clashes between Spanish police and voters and called the measures taken by the government "unacceptable."

Catalonia Plans to Proclaim Independence From Spain Within Several Days
Meanwhile, on Sunday, an independence referendum was held in Catalonia despite opposition from Madrid, which alongside Brussels, deemed it illegal.

According to the autonomous region’s authorities, over 90 percent of the voters supported Catalonia’s independence from Spain. Before the referendum has been held and on the day of the vote, the Spanish central authorities attempted to hamper it using various tactics, including the confiscation of ballots and ballot boxes, and prevented voters from participating in the referendum.
