MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The South Korean Defense Ministry is planning to introduce an artificial intelligence system (AI) to assist military commanders in taking decisions, local media reported Monday citing a military source.
"If we use AI in operational command decision making, military commanders will be able to get support in certain details that humans may overlook… I think it's not going to take long to see AI being a core assistant to commanders," the source told the Yonhap news agency.
The South Korean Defense Ministry is reportedly going to establish an AI system by 2025. Work on the project has already started, the source said.
The AI will have information on North Korean forces, their location and weapons, as well as on South Korean military capacities, including weapons' firepower and effective range.
Currently, Seoul and Washington have enhanced surveillance operations involving the use of U-2S ultra-high altitude reconnaissance aircraft, RC-800 and RF-16 reconnaissance planes, the E-737 airborne early warning and control aircraft and P-3C maritime patrol aircraft amid expectations that Pyongyang might test-fire a ballistic missile.
The situation on the Korean Peninsula has become tense due to Pyongyang's missile launches and nuclear tests, all conducted in violation of UN Security Council resolutions. The most recent missile test was conducted on September 15, when North Korea launched a ballistic missile, that flew over Japan before falling into the northern Pacific some 20 minutes after launch.
