Trump's remark that a meeting of US military leaders was "the calm before the storm" fueled speculations that the US and North Korea could be on the brink of war. When the president was asked to explain his phrase Trump confirmed that he meant Pyongyang.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — US President Donald Trump lambasted North Korea on Wednesday after he was quizzed about his cryptic "calm before the storm" remark that was seemingly related to Pyongyang’s missile capability.

"We can’t let this to go on, we just can’t. You can say what you want, this should have been handled 25 years ago," he replied to a Fox News host, who asked if he meant North Korea.

Trump made the remark last week after a meeting with US military leaders at the White House. He did not elaborate on what the storm could be.

Trump insisted President Barack Obama "should have taken care" of the issue. "Now it’s at a point where it is very far advanced. Something has to be done. We can’t allow his to happen," he continued.

The US leader added the Chinese "seem to be very helpful" in dealing with Pyongyang, including cutting off banking to the reclusive state, but indicated he was not entirely convinced of China’s commitment.
