The US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday in a televised interview that the alleged Russian meddling in 2016 presidential campaign was merely an excuse introduced by the Democratic party to justify their suffered political defeat.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Donald Trump accused on Wednesday the Democratic camp of using the alleged Russia collusion claim to justify their poor performance in the 2016 presidential election.

"Russia was an excuse used by the Democrats when they lost the election," the US leader said in an interview with Fox News.

The Democratic Party has repeatedly accused Russia of meddling in last year’s election process to undercut its candidate, Hillary Clinton.

"They sat in a room and they said, 'Wow, we look bad.' The morning after – in fact it's been written about in various books or a book – but they said, 'Why did you lose the election?' 'Ah, it was Russia! Russia!' It wasn't Russia, it was a bad candidate," Trump argued.

FBI Hands Trump-Russia Dossier Investigation Over to Special Counsel
Last month, the president called the accusations that his team had colluded with Moscow "one of the great hoaxes" the Democrats came up with after they did "a rotten job of running."

Russia has denied claims of helping Trump win the vote, insisting it does not meddle in home affairs of other countries. Kremlin officials have suggested the claims intended to deflect public attention from actual election fraud as well as corruption and other domestic problems.
