Many users of the platform decided to stay silent on Friday in protest after Rose McGowan’s voice was silenced by the micro-blogging platform. The campaign under the hashtag #WomenBoycottTwitter has drawn many activists, celebrities and journalists.
Ladies. Let's do this. #WomenBoycottTwitter. Not because of hate but because I love this platform and know it can be better.

I stand with my sisters. I won't be live tweeting the premiere of Jane the Virgin tomorrow. Instead come on over to @instagram I'll do BTS! pic.twitter.com/MKQkOlvGJl

Many men have also joined the protest, which started at midnight Thursday in New York and is set to last all day. Many criticized Twitter's hypocrisy, like Ghostbusters director Paul Feig.
Wow, @Twitter, seriously? THIS is the account you suspend but not Trump who threatened to wipe out another country? Suspend me too, please. https://t.co/ZHhvIkfEcN

Seriously @Twitter? You allow Trump to spew far worse, daily and suspend Rose McGowan? https://t.co/cklFUiYFjE

Others, however, objected the idea and voiced their support of the platform, wondering if escaping could "ever make anyone a winner."
If you are a woman & you are boycotting twitter, how can you be on twitter using the hashtag#WomenBoycottTwitter

Meanwhile, Rose McGowan seemed to be quite comfortable with the decision, inviting her supporters to follow her on Instagram.
The account of the movie star was suspended shortly after she addressed several tweets to Ben Affleck, telling him to "f*ck off" over his remarks on the Harvey Weinstein sex scandal.
