An outbreak of mob violence in Malawi sparked by rumors of vampire attacks prompted the country’s leadership to attempt to calm down the populace by assuaging their fears.

As lynch mobs in Malawi hunt for people suspected of being vampires, the country’s President Peter Mutharika called upon the ‘undead’ to stop terrorizing people.

"If people are using witchcraft to suck people's blood, I will deal with them and I ask them to stop doing that with immediate effect," President Mutharika said.

The president’s statement comes amid a wave of vigilante violence that gripped the country’s two southern districts since mid-September leaving at least 6 dead.

This rise of vigilantism has also prompted the UN to withdraw its staff from the afflicted regions due to safety concerns.

The Republic of Malawi, a small landlocked country in southeast Africa, is considered to be one of the poorest countries in the world, and belief in witchcraft is widespread in its rural regions.
