Celebrities approved the expulsion of the disfavored film producer from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences following its emergency meeting on October 14.

During the special session held in Los Angeles on Saturday morning, the Academy's board of governors voted to expel Harvey Weinstein due to allegations he sexually harassed or assaulted a number of women over the past three decades.

The organization stated: "We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over. What's at issue here is a deeply troubling problem that has no place in our society. The board continues to work to establish ethical standards of conduct that all Academy members will be expected to exemplify."

Hollywood stars took to Twitter to welcome the Oscars board's decision on the fate of the disgraced movie mogul.

Actress Mia Farrow, whose son Ronan is the author of the New Yorker article in which three women alleged that Weinstein had raped them, also expressed her satisfaction with the vote results.

Several celebrities likened Weinstein to Trump as they shared their thoughts on the Academy's decision to revoke Weinstein's membership.

Rose McGowan, one of the women who accused Weinstein of sexual harassment and assault, published a post on Instagram.

Only one other member has been expelled by the Academy throughout its 90-year history — actor Carmine Caridi, who violated specific written rules about sharing screener copies of films on February 3, 2004. Some entertainment figures with high-profile sexual or domestic assault allegations made against them, including Roman Polanski, Bill Cosby and Mel Gibson, are still members of the organization.

After a recent journalistic investigation by The New York Times and The New Yorker, Weinstein faces allegations of sexual misconduct and rape from about 30 women, including actresses Ashley Judd, Rose McGowan, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie, Italian model Ambra Battilana and several Miramax and Weinstein Company female employees. He has apologized for having "caused a lot of pain" but has forcefully denied all allegations of nonconsensual sex.

Since the allegations surfaced, the 65-year-old producer has been suspended by the British Film Academy and fired from the board of the Weinstein Company. His wife, Georgina Chapman, who married him in 2007 and has two children with him, has chosen to leave Mr. Weinstein.
