A new beverage that was invented as a result of a cooking blunder might intrigue coffee-lovers.

A Japanese man has created a drink that tastes like coffee, but is caffeine-free and made entirely of garlic.

"My drink is probably the world's first of its kind," 74-year-old Yokitomo Shimotai told the South China Morning Post.

The unusual drink went on sale in January, although Shimotai came up with the idea much earlier. After a cooking incident when he burnt a steak with some garlic, the man crumbled the rotten garlic with a spoon and put it into hot water. After he drank the mixture, Shimotai was surprised that its taste was very similar to that of coffee.

The beverage was discovered 30 years ago, but it took the man over two decades to develop the recipe he would eventually be satisfied with. Nowadays, the coffee shop owner is using his own patented technology to produce the coffee-like drink.

Shimotai believes that the beverage can be a good alternative to coffee for pregnant women and elderly people as it contains no caffeine and thus doesn't cause insomnia or high-blood pressure.
