10:00 GMT 17.10.2017 (Updated: 19:32 GMT 19.10.2022) According to some Japanese traditions, dolls and toys actually do have souls – therefore, they should never be simply thrown away. Instead, believers hold a ceremony, which allows them to bid a final farewell and lay to rest their former playthings in order not to upset the spirit living inside them.
Dozens of toy owners gathered at the Meiji Jingu Shrine in Shibuya, Tokyo, on Sunday, October 15, to take part in the annual Ninyo Kashasai ceremony of paying last respects to the toys, which are then burned or buried.
