Russia's Mariinsky Ballet to Give Performances of La Bayadere in Washington
22:24 GMT 17.10.2017 (Updated: 11:54 GMT 06.08.2022) Russian Mariinsky Ballet returns to Washington, DC to tell a love story of a temple dancer, bayadere, and a noble warrior taking place in exotic India.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Russia's renowned Mariinsky Ballet will give seven performances of the legendary La Bayadere ballet at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as the company returns to Washington, DC for its 16th season.
The opening night is on Tuesday and performances will last through October 22, celebrating the 200th birth anniversary of French choreographer Marius Petipa.
1 February 2017, 03:41 GMT
The ballet is set in three acts and tells a passionate love story of a temple dancer, or bayadere, and a noble warrior taking place in exotic India.
La Bayadere was created by Petipa, who was principal ballet master of the Mariinsky, more than 140 years ago and was set to music by Ludwig Minkus.
The decorations and lightning for the St. Petersburg ballet company were designed by Mikhail Shishliannikov, while the costumes were made by Yevgeny Ponomarev.
The Mariinsky last time treated the Washington audience to La Bayadere in 2008. Mariinsky’s Alexey Repnikov will conduct the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra for the performances.
