Mass protests in support of the opposition that broke out in the center of the Ukrainian capital three days ago have turned into violent clashes with police.

KIEV (Sputnik) — Kiev police chief Andriy Kryshchenko said police officers used tear gas in a clash with protesters in front of the Verkhovna Rada building in the Ukrainian capital on Wednesday. He noted that police used force in several cases adding it was made in line with the Ukrainian laws.

According to previous reports, at least 11 protesters were arrested in the course of the unrest.

The rally on Tuesday, during which protestors called for President Petro Poroshenko to resign, lingered as people decided to set up several tents and stay in front of the parliament. The protests were called for by the former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili, who was stripped of both Ukrainian and Georgian citizenship but managed to cross Ukraine's border.

The political pressure is mounting as protesters have put forward three main demands: to strip lawmakers of their immunity, to establish an anti-corruption court and to change the electoral system in order to allow independent lawmakers to enter Parliament.

President Petro Poroshenko tried to ease tensions by introducing a bill which presupposes the elimination of the lawmakers' immunity starting from 2020. However, this move was perceived solely as a sign that the current government is not willing to meet the demands of the people gathered outside the Parliament.
