"A group of insurgents attacked an army base in Chashmo area of Maiwand district in Kandahar province," according to the country's defense ministry.
Tolo News TV cited sources as saying suicide bombers in Humvees were responsible for the attack.
Earlier, the Taliban attacked a checkpoint in the northern Afghan province of Balkh, killing six police officers. According to the Pajhwok news agency, the attack was perpetrated by the militants of the Taliban terrorist group.
