MOSCOW (Sputnik) — US Forces Korea (USFK) officially confirmed on Sunday that it had deployed a unit in South Korea charged with operating the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, the Yonhap news agency reported Sunday.
According to the news agency, sources in the USFK said that an official ceremony was held on Thursday to transfer the Delta Battery of the 11th Air Defense Artillery (ADA) from Fort Bliss in the US state of Texas to the 35th ADA Brigade in South Korea.
The final units of the THAAD were deployed in early September after North Korea launched several missiles and conducted a nuclear test, however, the military unit and specialists operating were not fully in place at that time.
The deployment of the system has been held amid strong opposition from China and Russia, who cited national security concerns.
