Amid the tensions between the Iraqi government and Kurdistan authorities as a result of the independence referendum and the following Baghdad's military operation in Kirkuk, the region's opposition has called for the preservation of national unity.

CAIRO (Sputnik) — Iraqi Kurdistan’s opposition Gorran (Change) Movement and other major opposition parties are demanding the dissolution of the region’s presidential administration and the establishment of a provisional government of national salvation, the movement’s executive committee member Mohamad Tofiq Rahim told Sputnik on Tuesday.

"The movement has reached agreements with the Kurdistan Islamic Group [party] and with the union headed by Barham Salih [the Coalition for Democracy and Justice], to create a roadmap which would include five demands, with the dissolution of the region’s presidential administration and establishing a government of salvation being the key ones," Rahim said.

He also accused the current government of the autonomous region of the inability to find a solution to the existing crisis.

"We have set up a committee, which will seek to persuade all the other sides and parties to acknowledge the necessity of establishing a provisional government of national salvation in order to search for a viable solution to the crises," the opposition politician added.

A joint statement, released by the Coalition for Democracy and Justice, also included demands for the preservation of national unity, a constitution-based approach toward the crisis, and the supremacy of Iraqi Kurdistan’s parliament over other legislative bodies.

According to the document, a provisional government, established through negotiations between all the political parties, would be responsible for holding negotiations with the Iraqi federal government, preparations for general elections under the auspices of international monitoring teams, preparing the region’s draft constitution and the improvement of living standards.

The Gorran Movement was founded in 2009 and is in opposition to the ruling two-party coalition of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.

Following the independence referendum strongly criticized by Baghdad and many regional countries, the Iraqi government launched a military operation aiming to gain control over disputed territories, including those of Kirkuk, an oil-rich region, which followed the Iraqi Kurdistan’s decision to strive for separation.

The operation continued with Iraqi forces advancing toward the Syrian border in and the area of the Mosul Dam, according to information provided by the Kurdish Peshmerga Ministry.

Earlier this week, Erbil demanded an "immediate" withdrawal of Iraqi troops from the Kurdistan region's territory.
