India’s foreign ministry has sought an immediate report from the Uttar Pradesh administration on the alleged attack on a Swiss couple by four hooligans near the Taj Mahal. The victims have sustained serious injuries including a skull fracture and broken limbs.

New Delhi (Sputnik) In an act that has brought humanity to shame in India once again, four local youths have been captured in a video brutally thrashing a foreign tourist couple near the historical monument of Taj Mahal in Agra while bystanders captured the incident on their smartphones instead of rescuing the victims.

24 years old Quentin Jeremy Clerc and his girlfriend Marie Droz were returning back after visiting the Taj Mahal. Four local hooligans started following them as they walked along the railway tracks. The hooligans asked if they could take selfies with them. When denied, they allegedly thrashed them with stones and boulders, leaving them critically injured.

"Swiss couple –Quentin Jeremy Clerc and his girlfriend Marie Droz– on October 22 had gone to Fatehpur Kasba. While the couple was strolling near railway track boys who were playing there started following them. When couple objected, boys started pelting stones on them," Pradeep Kumar, a police officer of Fatehpur Sikri police station said.

The couple has been undergoing treatment at a hospital in New Delhi. According to the doctor treating them, Clerc has suffered a fracture in the skull and a clot in his brain. Droz, on the other hand, suffered a broken arm and multiple bruises.

We have moved him out of the ICU into a room. He is having a hearing problem otherwise he is conscious and talking," Dr. Rajendra Prasad, a neurosurgeon at the hospital said.

"We regret the incident. The case has been registered by the police. One accused has been arrested while others are being pursued," Salkhan Singh, police chief of Uttar Pradesh, the state where the incident took, place said.

Meanwhile, India’s Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijuju said that the incident has tarnished the country’s image and that the perpetrators should be severely punished.

"I think the foreign minister has reacted to it. It's a matter of law and order but as the culture minister and as a human being I condemn the attack on the foreign tourists. It's unfortunate, should not have happened. It's a matter of shame for us," Mahesh Sharma, India’s Culture Minister reacted to the incident.
