According to Tangerang's police chief, 47 people were confirmed dead; he added that he wasn't sure about the number of people "who are still unaccounted for."

It is believed that an electrical malfunction may have caused the deadly explosion, although an investigation is underway. Tangerang, where the plant is located, is a densely populated city 25 km west of Jakarta in the province of Baten.
Social media users started to upload photos allegedly showing the site of the blast.

Local media reported that more than 40 people are being treated in hospitals, and the bodies of those killed are being sent to a police hospital in Jakarta for identification.
In September, at least eight people died and 25 more were injured in a fire at a clandestine fireworks factory in India. The fireworks incidents occur often in India during the fall due to the large number of carnivals which make use of pyrotechnics.
