14:02 GMT 31.10.2017 (Updated: 19:32 GMT 19.10.2022) The successful military operations of the Syrian Army in the Deir ez-Zor suburbswas quite demanding. The towns on Saker Island are located on the banks of the Euphrates and are full of trees and tunnels. The Euphrates River also enhanced the chances of the militants to evade the army and slip through the countryside.
The Syrian Army has managed to dislodge the terrorists from the Saker Island, located southeast of Deir ez-Zor.
Daesh terrorists used numerous tunnels to their advantage for hiding. In addition, they moved across the Euphrates River using it to commune towards the city and into the surrounding villages.

However, the
Syrian Army had devised a strategic plan for the operation.
At first the Syrian Army had to ensure safety of the areas adjacent to Deir ez-Zor airport. Then the army evicted the Daesh terrorists that were hiding in the village of al-Jafrah. The road that connected Deir ez-Zor with the cities of Hasaka and al-Bukamal was also taken under the army’s control.
As a result of the operation, Daesh positions were surrounded and the militants were deprived of supplies.
Right before the final assault, aviation and Syrian artillery opened fire on the militants’ positions. The infantry entered following tanks and armored vehicles from the east. Dozens of mined vehicles were rendered harmless by the infantry.
Currently the barricades have been disassembled and sappers have demined most of the villages located on Saker Island. The army believes that this was the largest group of terrorists located in the suburbs of Deir ez-Zor.
