A wanted poster was initially released by the FBI Wednesday of Mukhammadzoir Kadirov, a 32-year-old native of Uzbekistan. He was being looked at as a person of interest, not a suspect; as of Wednesday evening William Sweeney Jr., the FBI assistant director at the New York field office, said Kadirov was no longer sought.

Federal prosecutors have filed terrorism charges against 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov in connection with the Tuesday attack in which he mowed down pedestrians along a Manhattan bike path. The charges, filed by the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, include providing material support to a terrorist group and destruction of a motor vehicle.
US officials have noted that Saipov chose Halloween to carry out his attack in order to kill as many people as possible.
