BEIRUT (Sputnik) — Amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Syria, millions of people have fled the crisis-torn state. According to the UN Refugee Agency over million of refugees from Syria are currently in Lebanon.
"The project of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Minister Gebran Bassil regarding the return of the Syrian refugees to the stable regions [of Syria] is in line with the Lebanese constitution and international law, as required by the conditions after a seven-year burden of resettlers from Syria that had a negative and dangerous impact at all levels, including in economy and security," the sources said.
According to the sources, Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri and country's President Michel Aoun had already discussed the situation and the possibility to attract Moscow as a mediator in the talks with Damascus aimed at return of people to Syria.
According to the text of the document obtained by Sputnik, Lebanon refuses to provide citizenship to the Syrians currently on its territory and proposes gradual return of the refugees to their homeland.
