18:06 GMT 03.11.2017 (Updated: 18:47 GMT 06.03.2023) Supporters of Catalonia's sovereignty have gathered near the Barcelona City Council building as dismissed leader Carles Puigdemont has said he is ready to participate in the December snap election announced by Madrid.
Catalonia's parliament proclaimed independence on October 27 based on the results of the October 1 referendum. The Spanish government does not recognize the move and has decided to impose direct rule on the region, further ordering nine former ministers of Catalonia to be remanded in custody pending trial in connection with the independence initiative.
