The US President, who has often sent shockwaves through the twitterverse, may have caused the medium itself to flinch.

Donald Trump's personal Twitter account was deactivated for eleven minutes due to "a human error." The culprit in question was an unnamed Twitter employee; it was his (or her) last day of work, the company said in a statement.

All those who tried to visit the @realDonaldTrump Twitter page at about 11pm GMT saw the message "Sorry, that page doesn't exist."

Twitter said in a subsequent statement that that the deactivation "was done by a Twitter customer support employee who did this on the employee' last day."

The company added that "a full internal review" is under way.

Internet users immediately reacted to the news, with some suggesting the deactivation was a deliberate move.

This Twitter user described the deactivation as "a glitch in the Matrix."

Some of the tweets were not that serious, and featured funny GIFs.
