New Delhi (Sputnik) – The accident at the National Thermal Power Corporation Unchahar plant in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh occurred at boiler no 6 of the unit last Wednesday. “Unit#6 (500 MW) of the plant is under shutdown after the accident; however the other units of the station are operating normally,” NTPC said in a statement.
In the video, captured by one of the workers on his mobile phone; a loud explosion is followed by blazing flames and steam gushing from a corner of the plant. The footage of the inferno is accompanied by the screams, probably of the terrified workers and engineers.

Meanwhile, a preliminary investigation suggests that there was gross negligence on the part of NTPC as reported by local media. “We have found the formation and accumulation of clinker in the boiler duct and the lack of its poking as the main reason for the explosion,” Jagmohan, head of a five-member team, who sent its report to the state government on Friday, was quoted by the Hindustan Times.
