A rare rice variety grown in Zhefang Township of Mang City, Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, sells for a whopping 1,000 yuan (about $150) per kilogram, local media reported on November 6.
The average height of the plant reaches 2.4 meters and the high quality of the grain has been known since ancient times — this rice, which is considered to be one of the best in the world, was even used by the Chinese imperial family for centuries. However, its planting costs are high and average yield is quite low — only 150 kilograms per mu (0.07 hectares).
