New Delhi (Sputnik) — The Indian Embassy in Zimbabwe has clarified that all Indians in the country are safe in the aftermath of the alleged military coup.
"Situation in Harare is calm. Embassy staff, the Indian community, and both persons of Indian origin and expats are safe. No reason for concern and worry," the Indian mission in Harare tweeted on Wednesday.

Zimbabwe is home to around 9,000 people of Indian origin out of which almost 500 live in the capital, Harare. The presence of Indians in Zimbabwe goes back to about 1890 when Indian plantation workers in apartheid South Africa crossed over to then Southern Rhodesia.
The Indian government is keeping a close eye on the changing political situation in Zimbabwe, sources in India's Ministry of External Affairs told Sputnik.
