Leonid Meteor Shower 2017 in UK: Incredible Show on Its Way
16:06 GMT 17.11.2017 (Updated: 16:16 GMT 17.11.2017) As the stargazing season in the UK has finally set in, take a chance and spare some time this week to admire the beautiful Leonid meteor shower.
The annual phenomenon occurs as the Earth comes through the debris field from the Tempel–Tuttle comet. The minute particles, just half a gram each, burn up in the upper atmospheric layers causing a beautiful show to appear. This mostly happens thanks to the incredibly high speed at which the particles collide with Earth.
The name for the meteor shower is geographically motivated, as it will occur in a region close to the constellation Leo.
To catch a glimpse of it seems more than a realistic scenario since the show traditionally lasts for 10-15 hours and it will peak over Britain between the late hours of Friday November 17 and early hours of Saturday November 18.
