WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States released an updated summary of its objectives for renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement to alert the American people of what President Donald Trump's administration hopes to achieve, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said.
“This update is an important next step in ensuring that the American people continue to know what the Trump Administration is seeking to achieve in a renegotiated NAFTA,” Lighthizer said on Friday in a statement released by the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR).
“If we are able to achieve these objectives, we will both modernize and rebalance NAFTA to better serve the interests of our workers, farmers, ranchers and businesses,” he said.
These goals include boosting market access for agriculture, promoting transparency and expanding investment and inetllectual property objectives, it added.
The Trump administration still hopes to achieve a trade deficit reduction and to introduce measures to prevent trade distortions, the statement said.
