WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — An estimated 5,000 European nationals have traveled from Europe to fight in the region in recent years, EU’s senior security official said.
"We have no grounds to believe that there is some sort of large-scale group seeking to come back to Europe," King told RIA Novosti in Washington DC.
King admitted that the challenge associated with their return was real, and EU authorities have been working with Italy and Greece to boost border protections and screening. He said Turkey, which struck a refugee deal with Brussels, played a key role in EU efforts to protect its borders.
