MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian parlamentarian has characterized the high-level Russian-US conversation as a landmark.
"Our countries have not overcome the crisis. But [the two presidents] have managed to discuss a lot of issues – Afghanistan, North Korea, Syria, Ukraine. Our presidents need to communicate more, regardless of all the toxic criticism from the Capitol Hill. This would allow us, the two leading world powers, to move further step-by-step on all the key present-day issues," Slutsky said.
The call took place on Tuesday. Trump has called the conversation "great."
"The telephone conversation between Putin and Trump, which has taken about an hour, confirms that the possibilities for restoration of constructive and businesslike relations between Moscow and Washington have not been exhausted. It is of special importance for resolving key issues of the international agenda," Slutsky told journalists late on Tuesday.
'Great' Call With Russian President Lasted More Than an Hour
US President Donald Trump said that he had a great conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which lasted nearly an hour and a half.
"We had a great call with President Putin. We’re talking about peace in Syria, very important. We’re talking about North Korea. We had a call that lasted almost an hour and a half," Trump told reporters on Tuesday.
"Both presidents also stressed the importance of… [ensuring] the stability of a unified Syria free of malign intervention and terrorist safe havens," the White House said on Tuesday.
US and Russian leaders have also discussed the situation on the Korean Peninsula and in Ukraine during a phone call on Tuesday.
"President Trump and President Putin also discussed how to implement a lasting peace in Ukraine, and the need to continue international pressure on North Korea to halt its nuclear weapon and missile programs," the White House said on Tuesday.
Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in a phone call stressed the importance of backing UN-led talks to resolve the conflict in Syria.
"Both presidents also stressed the importance of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2254, and supporting the U.N.-led Geneva Process to peacefully resolve the Syrian civil war," the White House said in a press release.
Moreover, Persidents have discussed the importance of fighting together against terrorism in the Middle East.
"The two presidents affirmed the importance of fighting terrorism together throughout the Middle East and Central Asia and agreed to explore ways to further cooperate in the fight against ISIS [Daesh], al-Qaeda, the Taliban and other terrorist organizations," the White House said.
According to the Kremlin press service, Vladimir Putin also informed Trump about the results of his recent meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad, during which the Syrian leader reaffirmed his commitment to the political process, constitutional reform, as well as to hold presidential and parliamentary elections.
