According to the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), three quarters of the affected cases are Road Traffic Act offenses such as drug driving, while the remaining cases include violent crime, sexual offenses, and unexplained deaths.

An investigation into alleged manipulation with forensic evidence at a laboratory in the United Kingdom has revealed that over 10,000 cases may have been affected across the country, the NPCC said Tuesday.

"The National Police Chiefs’ Council, working with the Forensic Science Regulator, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), the Home Office and local forces, have identified more than 10,000 cases across 42 force areas that may have been affected by manipulation," the NPCC said in a statement.

The investigation into the alleged manipulation carried out by individuals working at Manchester-based Randox Testing Services (RTS) was launched in January, when a data anomaly in a drug driving case was detected.

As a result, two individuals from RTS have been arrested and five more have been interviewed under caution, the NPCC added.

According to the NPCC, 70 percent of the highest priority cases have been submitted for retesting with the rest expected to be completed by mid-2018.
