On her fundraising page, Kate McClure, 27, wrote that she got stranded on a highway near Philadelphia late one night when her car ran out of gas. It was dark and she was all alone when suddenly she saw a man approach her car.
A homeless man named Johnny Bobbitt, 34, offered to help Kate and went to get gas for her car spending his last few bucks.
Later on Kate returned to thank him by bringing him gifts. But when she learned that Bobbitt was an ex-Marine and a former firefighter, she felt compelled to help him get back on his feet.
She started a GoFundMe page to share the story and raise funds for Bobbitt. So far the page has raised $160,000 in donations, far more than her $10,000 target.
Kate wrote that she would like to use the funds to help Bobbitt with renting an apartment, getting a car and covering four to six months’ worth of expenses.
