MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — The citizens of Honduras are heading to the polling stations on Sunday to cast their votes for the country's next president, 128 unicameral National Congress lawmakers as well as almost 300 mayors.
There are three main candidates in the race for the presidency in the Central American country — incumbent President Juan Orlando Hernandez from the National Party of Honduras, Salvador Nasralla from the Opposition Alliance and Luis Zelaya Medrano from the Liberal Party.
Hernandez has been serving as the president of Honduras since January 2014, with his mandate ending in January 2018.
In June 2009, ex-Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was ousted by the military after he proposed to hold a referendum to rewrite the Constitution.
