Fourty people have sustained injuries after a floor collapsed at the Butterfly Disco Club in Adeje on Spain's holiday island of Tenerife at 2.30 a.m. GMT, the regional government of Spain's Canary Islands said in a statement on Sunday.
"After the floor collapsed, the people who were inside fell to the basement from the height of approximately one floor," the statement reads.

Firefighters stayed at the scene until 6:00 a.m. to search the basement for missing people.

Eighteen people went to hospital themselves, while 21 had to be brought there by local emergency services, with one person being treated at the scene, the regional government said. The injuries included broken legs, ankle sprains and bruises, while two of the injuries were deemed serious.

According to the government, the injured included two French men aged 38 and 40, two British men aged 57 and 59, a 45-year-old Romanian man, and a 23-year-old Belgian woman.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident; the club had its licence in order and wasn't overcrowded at the moment of the accident.
The Canary Islands, which are located off the west coast of Africa, are Spain's second most visited region after Catalonia.
