Congratulations have flowed in from around the world for Prince Harry and his fiancee Meghan Markle, who have given their first TV interview since their engagement.

Prince Harry and his fiancee, actress Meghan Markle, have given their first TV interview after announcing their engagement.

In an interview with BBC journalist Mishal Husain on Monday, the couple revealed that Harry popped the question at his Nottingham Cottage residence, on the grounds of Kensington Palace.

They were enjoying a "typical, cozy" night in at home, "trying to roast a chicken," when Harry got down on one knee.

Meghan said that she "could barely let [him] finish" before saying yes to his proposal.

"It was a really nice moment, just the two of us, and I think I managed to catch her by surprise as well," Harry said.

Meghan has already met Harry's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, a couple of times, who she described as "an incredible woman."

"The corgis took to you straight away. For the last 33 years I've been barked at, this one walks in and – nothing, just wagging tails," Harry said of Meghan, who has several dogs herself.

Meghan's gold engagement ring was designed by Prince Harry himself and contains three diamonds. The central stone is from Botswana, where the couple went on vacation early in their relationship.

After being introduced by a mutual friend, Meghan and Harry had a couple of dates in London before Harry "managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana."

"We camped out with each other under the stars, she came and joined me for five days out there which was absolutely fantastic. Then, we were really by ourselves which was crucial for me to make sure we had a chance to get to know each other," Harry said.

The engagement ring also features some smaller diamonds which belonged to Harry's late mother, Princess Diana.

"The little diamonds on either side are from my mother's jewelry collection to make sure that she's with us on this crazy journey together," Harry explained.

Meghan said she has also met Harry's mother's side of the family, "which is important to me too."

"Meeting different people who were so important to his mom, I'm able to in some way know a part of her through them and of course through him. It's so incredibly special to be able to have this [the ring,]" Meghan said.

If his mother were alive, Harry said he thought she and Meghan "would be thick as thieves, without question. I think she'd be over the moon, jumping up and down, so excited for me."

The couple has been congratulated on their engagement by their family, friends and other people from around the world.

Markle's parents released a statement saying they are "incredibly happy for Meghan and Harry."

"We wish them a lifetime of happiness and are very excited for their future together."

Harry's father Prince Charles said the news is "marvelous."

The couple plan to get married next year. UK immigration rules state that Meghan, who was born and raised in Los Angeles, will need a fiancee settlement visa and a marriage visa to live in the UK.

The couple will also need a special wedding license from the Archbishop of Canterbury if they want a church wedding, because Meghan is divorced. However, Westminster Abbey officials have already indicated that her divorce won't prevent the couple from getting married in a church.
