Show Me Your Tats, Kid! Meet Whang-od, a Centenarian Ink Master
17:00 GMT 30.11.2017 (Updated: 19:32 GMT 19.10.2022) Also known as Maria Oggay, this 100-year-old granny from Buscalan, a town in Kalinga province, Philippines, has been a tattoo artist since she was 15. Whang-od is often described as the last and oldest “mambabatok” – a traditional tattooist of the indigenous people of Butbut.
Every village in Kalinga used to have a tattoo master to "register" people's milestones, such as marriages or war victories. Those times are long gone, but Whang-od Oggay continues to apply her traditional art to tourists from across the world who are visiting Buscalan.
Traditional tattoos are done manually with a pigment extracted from charcoal, using a spike from a lemon tree and a bamboo stick.
