A nurse working for the Lindenhof Senior Center in Lürrip found 109 valuable gold coins in a box with food donated to the facility, the Rheinische Post newspaper reported.
At first glance, the amount of coins might not sound very impressive, until the actual value of the discovery was made known.
The center's employees researched the coins on the internet, and were awestruck when they learned that the coins looked like South African Krugerrands each of which is worth around €1,000, which made the total value of the find over €100,000.

The care home's employees immediately called the police who started an investigation and has since found the mysterious donor.
It turned out to be an 88-year-old woman who had decided to give away a box of left-over drinks after the death of her husband, the police said.
According to reports, the widow had known about the existence of the coins but had no idea why they were hidden and assumed that the whole thing could be some kind of a plan to steel them.
The police investigation into the case is still underway.
