The ranking, published on December 6, was based on ten criteria, including the level of development of tourism infrastructure and hotel business, the popularity of the region among Russian and foreign tourists, the number of cultural heritage objects and the ecological and criminogenic situation in the region. It also takes into account the number of publications in the media and Internet inquiries about holidays in the region.

Krasnodar Region became the leader of the 2017 National Tourist Rating.

Moscow, which topped the list in 2016, shifted to second place this year.

The third place in the ranking was taken by Moscow Region.

The Crimean Republic, in fourth place, secured the same position as last year in the rating of the most attractive Russian region.

St. Petersburg, which has won the World Travel Awards for the third year in a row, took the fifth place.

Stavropol Krai significantly improved its position and moved into sixth place, up from thirteenth.

Altai Krai was ranked seventh most attractive region of Russia.

Ninth place on the list went to Primorsky Krai.
