MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — The Chilean election commission said that the country's former President Sebastian Pinera is leading in the second round of the presidential election with 54.29 percent of votes after almost half of the ballots counted.
Pinera's rival senator Alejandro Guillier has received 45,71 percent so far, according to the commission.
On Sunday, Chile held the presidential election run-off.
The first round of the presidential election, which took place on November 19, resulted in Pinera's 36.64 percent and Guillier's 22.70 percent of the votes. The victory in the first round would have been possible with over 50 percent of the vote.
