MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Terrorist attacks in France and worldwide were named one of the most important events of the expiring 2017 year by 53 percent of French citizens, a poll conducted by the Elabe Institute showed Thursday.

"Being invited to choose three most important events of 2017 among 16 proposed variants, 53 percent of French mentioned terrorist attacks in France and worldwide (30 percent of whom mentioned them first)," the Elabe poll, conducted for the BFMTV broadcaster, said.

The election of Emmanuel Macron as the president of the French Republic was included in the top three important events of 2017 by 41 percent of respondents. For nearly one-third of French citizens (27 percent), 2017 has been marked by the death of French rock and roll and pop singer Johnny Hallyday.

The year of 2017 has been marred by a series of terrorist attacks worldwide, including in France, Russia, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. In France alone, several stabbing and vehicle ramming attacks were carried out in the cities of Marseille, Orly, and Paris in 2017.

On November 1, 2017, France adopted tougher security laws to put an end to the previous emergency situation. The country had been in a state of emergency since November 2015 following terror attacks claimed by the Daesh terrorist group in Paris and Saint-Denis that left 130 people dead. Since then, the country has been targeted by 20 terror attacks — the deadliest one claiming over 80 lives in Nice in 2016 — and numerous attacks on members of the police and the military.
