ANKARA (Sputnik) - The United States cannot change the positions other states have on Jerusalem's status by threatening them on the eve of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) vote on the issue, which is set for later on Thursday, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said.

The UNGA is expected to issue a draft resolution on Jerusalem on Thursday titled "Illegal Israeli actions in Occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territory." The meeting comes four days after the United States vetoed a UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution calling for US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel to be canceled.

During a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Trump said that he is carefully watching how each country votes in the UNSC and UNGA, and those that vote against US interests could lose out on aid from Washington.

"The United States must understand that it is unacceptable to influence the position of sovereign states by means of pressure and threats. The UN General Assembly vote on Jerusalem issue, slated for December 21, is an opportunity to show this to the whole world. We do not believe that any sovereign and independent state will surrender to the US president's threats and pressure," Bozdag said on Twitter on Thursday.

Bozdag added that "Ankara has a clear position," and that Turkey will again support Palestine during the vote.

On December 6, Trump announced his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and instructed the US State Department to launch the process of moving the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city. The move has prompted a wave criticism from a number of states and triggered protests in the region.
