The first decentralized digital currency lost on Wednesday almost a half of its highest value that it reached in December.

Bitcoin fell over seven percent on the Luxembourg-based Bitstamp exchange on Wednesday. Still the crypto currency costs almost ten times as much as it did a year ago.

The news comes amid reports that China aims to block virtual currency trading. At the same time, South Korea is seeking to ban cryptocurrency trading entirely.

At its peak in December, bitoin has reached the treshold of $20,000 on some exchanges. Since then, the cryptocurrency has generally been on a slide.
