The European Union adheres to the plan for settling the Palestinian-Israeli confrontation by creating two states with Jerusalem as their shared capital, the Head of European foreign affairs Federica Mogherini said at a news conference.

"First of all, I want to assure Mahmoud Abbas and his delegation that we reaffirm the commitment of the European Union to the principle of two states with Jerusalem as a common capital for the two countries: Israel and Palestine. This remains the position of the EU, based on the Oslo accords and international consensus," Mogherini said.
The United States recognized the whole city of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on December 6, 2017. The decision provoked a negative reaction from the leaders of the Arab countries, including some allies of the United States. A UN Security Council resolution condemning the recognition of the status of the city was blocked by Washington.
