Neo-fascist members and supporters of the Unite the Right 2 march gathered close to the White House as counterprotestors in much larger numbers rallied hundreds of feet away.
Local police, fearing a repeat of last year's deadly tragedy in Charlottesville, turned out in force, erecting barricades to separate the two groups.
When it was all over and the rain began to fall, attendees and security forces drifted away and only sanitary workers stayed behind to clean up the mess.
