In early August, the FBI released documents that provide new details on how former British spy Christopher Steele cooperated as a Confidential Human Source (CHS) with the agency. In particular, the 71-page heavily-redacted document is made up mostly of payment requests and receipts to and from Steele, but also shows how the relationship with the FBI collapsed.

Republicans on the House intelligence committee have accused the FBI of illegally spying on the Trump campaign based on unsubstantiated information from Steele. The FBI’s handling of the dossier has taken on added importance in recent days amid claims by Trump that the agency placed spies in his campaign for political reasons.
Since Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election, the US authorities have been investigating on various levels the allegations about his campaign team's possible collusion with Russia, and have claimed that Moscow allegedly meddled in the election process to help Trump win against then-Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is currently leading a probe into Russia's purported meddling in the 2016 US presidential election. Russian officials have repeatedly stressed that Moscow has never tampered with US election and stressed that no accusations against Russia have been substantiated.
